Trip Overview:

Arrival and overnight in Panama City—October 24 (1 night)

Canopy Camp--October 25-29 (4 nights)

Canopy Tower--October 29-November 1 (3 nights, optional)

Just a four-hour flight from Atlanta, where birds from North, Central, and South America mingle, Panama offers some of the world’s best birding, and Canopy Family’s renowned eco-lodges offer first-rate guides, delicious meals, comfortable lodging, and amazing birding in some of Panama’s most biodiverse areas.

Join Feathers with Furr for a small-group Panama adventure with Canopy Family. Not only does this carefully curated tour offer the special opportunity to see both Crested and Harpy Eagles, it is timed with peak migration through the region, when millions of birds funnel through this narrow corridor on the way south to their wintering grounds. Raptor migration can be particularly awe-inspiring when, on any given day, thousands of raptors may be streaming across the skies. Both Canopy Camp and especially Canopy Tower provide incredible opportunities to witness this extraordinary neotropical birding spectacle. In addition to our quest to see eagles and witness raptor migration, we have the chance to see well over 300 species of birds, including 25+ species of hummingbirds, along with other amazing wildlife including monkeys, sloths, anteaters, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, moths, and more.

After an overnight at a hotel in Panama City, we’ll spend four nights at the Canopy Camp in the Darién province, the gateway to South America. The Camp’s lush grounds offer birding opportunities right outside the comfortable safari-style tents, from the bustling hummingbird feeders to the vulture feeding station. During our time at the Camp, we’ll have exciting full-day excursions to see both Crested and Harpy Eagles, with another more relaxed day to enjoy birds on the grounds and nearby trails.

For those who are looking to extend the adventure, we’ll spend three nights at the Canopy Tower outside Panama City. A former US Air Force radar tower in the midst of Soberania National Park, the area around the Tower is home to a huge diversity of birds and many new species for the tour. Visiting at the peak of raptor migration, we hope to see hundreds of raptors, if not thousands, winging their way south. Even without favorable winds, we’ll have a chance to see birds like Keel-billed Toucan and Blue Cotinga at eye level from the rooftop deck, if we can pull ourselves away from the bustling hummingbird feeders downstairs. Our time at the Canopy Tower will also include a day of exploring the world-famous Pipeline Road.
